Schools collect and maintain student records to provide for the growth and development of individual students, to provide information to parents and authorized staff, and to provide a basis for the evaluation and improvement of school programs. Student records may include attendance, scholarship, medical, discipline, and special education. Marshall County Schools has designated certain information contained in the education records of its students as directory information for purposes of the Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). The following information regarding students is considered directory information: name, address, telephone number, date, and place of birth, major field of study, participation in recognized activities and sports, weight and height of members of athletic teams, dates of attendance, diploma awarded, honors, and awards. Directory information may be disclosed by Marshall County Schools for any purposes in its discretion without the consent of a parent of a student or the student who is of legal age (18 years). Federal law allows schools to give the United States military access to directory information regarding students unless there is a specific direction from a parent denying that request. Parents of students and students of legal age have the right to refuse the designation of any or all of the above information as directory information. In that case, this information will not be disclosed except with the consent of a parent or the student of legal age or as otherwise allowed by FERPA. Any parent or student of legal age refusing to have any or all of the designated directory information disclosed must file written notification to this effect in the principal's office. In the event a refusal is not filed, this institution assumes that neither a parent nor the student of legal age objects to the release of the directory information designated. Marshall County Schools will not sell, convey, or disclose any information contained in these records except in accordance with FERPA and applicable state law.
